Teaching Union Tax Rebate

If you pay subscriptions to a teaching union you could be due a tax rebate.
If you pay subscriptions to a teaching or education union such as NUT, NASUWT, ATL, NAHT, NPH, Voice, EIS, ASCL, or the UCU you can claim tax relief on your payments. This tax relief won’t be given to you automatically and you have to make a claim to get it deducted from your taxable income. Due to the inconvenience of this most teachers don’t claim, however at www.teachertaxrebate.co.uk we can provide a quick and easy solution which allows a claim to be generated in 5 minutes through our website.
Why can I claim for this?
HMRC allows tax relief on “expenses incurred wholly, exclusively and necessarily for the purposes of employment”, and these costs meet those criteria.
Can I backdate my claim?
You can backdate your claim to the 4 previous tax years. You won’t need to provide receipts for your payments, however you will need to state how much you paid in each year. If you lodge a claim with us we can help you find out what your earlier payments were.
Can I claim for anything else?
If you paid for your registration to the GTC (General Teaching Council) you can claim tax relief on this cost.
The GTC for England was axed in 2012, however it is still possible to claim tax back on these costs as claims can be backdated 4 years, currently to the 2009/10 tax year. GTCs still exist in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and you can claim tax back on these costs for all of the previous 4 years and for future ongoing years.
If you have to teach PE or sports lessons we can also help you claim tax relief on any sports wear and equipment you paid for yourself for this purpose.
How do I claim?
If you enter your details at www.teachertaxrebate.co.uk you can get the forms to claim.
Is it easy to claim?
Yes, it takes around 5 minutes for you to complete a claim with us, then just send off the paper forms and we’ll do the rest.
How long does it take?
Usually your claim is lodged within 5 working days of you posting off the paper forms. Most claims are completed within 12 weeks subject to HMRC’s workload.
